There is nothing like sitting in an audience and seeing a live play. Whether it is a comedy or drama, it is a chance to join in a community that—for all the great things about movies—film just doesn’t create.
Starkville has a great asset in the Playhouse on Main of the Starkville Community Theater (SCT). SCT was founded in 1978 to enhance the cultural and educational activities of the citizens of the Starkville area. In its 38-year history, it has produced a number of notable plays, including Steel Magnolias, Damn Yankees, Blithe Spirit, and Rumors. The Playhouse on Main is an intimate theater, seating just 89 people.
Best of all, there is a rich season coming up in 2016. The first production of the year will be playwright Christopher Durang’s Tony award-winning Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. The play concerns a brother and sister living in Bucks County, Pennsylvania whose lives are suddenly disrupted by the arrival of their sister, a famous movie star. Mix in a clairvoyant names Cassandra, an aspiring actress next door, and both poignant scenes and laugh’s result.
The next play in the Spring will be centered on family sparring and golf, in Ken Ludwig’s The Fox on the Fairway.
The Spring will end with an extra, Jon Robin Baitz’s Other Desert Cities. It is also a family drama, set in Palm Springs, California and dramatizing the effects of one sister’s intent to publish a memoir of life in the family.
As SCT is a community theater, there are plenty of opportunities to become involved as an actor, director, usher, and more. Check out their web page for opportunities and dates.
